Not Everything Goes to Plan
Life has a habit of being unpredictable. Usually right when there's lots going on, or when you're creating some momentum in your business.
That was this week for me. My son was off school sick for the week, so all the daily routines I'm used to went out of the window.
I've spent the week in the kitchen working on my laptop whenever Tex (our puppy) was napping or chilling, in between the usual job of mothering a sick child. The day transitioned from work to dinner to clearing up to working again to bedtime, without any clean break between them.
All the lines have been blurred this week. No buckets for each part. All in the same bucket - dealing with whatever came first.
Sleep's been a bit rubbish too, because I still need to get up at 6am to let Tex out. But I've still made time to exercise and eat well, and look after myself the best I can - minus the sleep part. All of which make the biggest difference!
Sometimes you have to accept that things aren't always going to be perfect.
😷Kids will get sick.
🤒You'll get sick.
🆘Someone will need your help.
🚨A home or car emergency will crop up.
I think it's harder for some of us than others. If you're like me and love a routine, and feel out of whack when things go awry, then losing control of your day or week is genuinely tough.
I think you have to roll with the punches though, because a day or week off schedule isn't going to kill your progress. Not really. And actually, I think building a business is much more about the journey than the end goal.
Weeks like this make me ask different questions.
🗨️How can I make situations like this easier to deal with when they crop up?
🗨️What parts of my business really matter for me to do?
🗨️What parts are time-sucks I've been conditioned to think I have to do?
🗨️Where can I ask for help?
🗨️What can I automate?
🗨️Where can I go easy on myself?
It's one week. What really is one week when you compare it to a lifetime?
Life is going to happen. There will be days when you don't have the energy to work on your business, let alone in it. Times when you'll beat yourself up for not doing something you said you would, or compare yourself to others who seem to be doing much better than you.
What I'd remind you of is this. There isn't a single person out there who's at 100% with the effort they make every day. Even if their business looks like it's thriving right now, there'll be another part of their life that isn't - and that's the bit you'll never see. Not unless we start talking about it more.
Social media sells you a dream. That's it. It doesn't show you every moment of someone's life, and it doesn't need to either. That part is for living. But if it feels right, share the boring or annoying or off-piste bits too. It helps the rest of us feel like we're not the only one.
Have a good weekend!
